Special Considerations for the Home Based Small Business
The
Home Office - Generally you should strive to replicate a professional office
setting. The home office should provide privacy and room for the standard office
equipment, computers, printers, fax, etc. If you plan on meeting clients at your
home office, be certain to check the zoning restrictions to see if you are permitted
to run a business out of your home. (Because, if you don’t the nosey neighbor will…)
Computers - Most small businesses don’t need high-end graphics
cards, surround sound, DVD drives and other “necessities” of a high-end home computer.
What your business does need, is a solid, reliable computer system. For the home
based business, the official designation of "the office" computer is very important.
The “office computer” should only be used for business related activities and not
for family members to chat, play online games or email baby pictures to Aunt Mildred.

Home Networking - A network lets you share files and office
resources such as printers, high speed internet access and scanners between multiple
users. Even a very small office with two or three computers can often benefit from
having a network installed. Home wireless networking has made great strides in recent
years but still suffers from interference and security issues. The alternative is
the installation of category 5 (Cat 5) (or category 6 Cat 6) computer cabling in
your home. We offer professional data cabling services to home based small businesses
if you choose to go the hard wired route.
Remote Connectivity - Remote access technologies are revolutionizing
the way companies work – both large and small. Your ability to access information
online, receive and send calls, emails and faxes is critical to the success of your
home based business. Consider what would happen if the phone line went dead. Are
you “out of business?” If you frequently access the internet or company virtual
private network (VPN) figure in the cost of adding MULTIPLE connection sources from
DIFFERENT vendors. High speed DSL or cable internet connections are a wonderful
invention and may make the home based business a reality but often it’s the back-up
56K dial-up service that keeps the client or saves the sale.
Internet Security - Home office computers are particularly
vulnerable to unauthorized access since they often contain valuable, sensitive information
and do not have the benefit of an on call IT staff. Viruses, hackers, and other
computer problems are an important consideration since they too can put you “out
of business” (at least temporarily). We offer on-site computer system maintenance
services to home based businesses on a monthly or quarterly basis. Let us act as
your IT staff to ensure your computers and internet security are always up and running.
Backup Systems - Loosing your precious office data is a bad
thing and should be avoided. As you may have already guessed, a home office computer
without the proper backup systems in place is a disaster waiting to happen. There
are two types of backup systems you need to consider – data and power. Data backup
systems may include CD/DVD burners, tape backup or external hard drives. Also, consider
an electrical power backup (UPS) that will allow you to save your work if the power
goes out.
